Pearl or lemon?

Cool to see that RIM is going public with the much- blogged-about-already Pearl, their new multi-tasking (music, camera, expansion slot etc.) device. As a devoted 'berry-man (skip the Chris DeBurgh jokes please ;-)) and having FINALLY recently upgraded to the 8700 (more on that whole story later) I am really pleased to see them getting with the multipurpose program.

But why, oh why are they sticking with the awful phone-not-QWERTY keyboard? Unfortunately, that call means that I, for one, won't be buying. That dinky thing is a nasty way to write an email.

Shame.

i played around with the pearl a couple of days ago. it's small and sweet! the suretype keyboard appeared to be pretty easy to use. that said, the pearl is not the device for everyone, particularly people who want something with some more meat and a qwerty keyboard. but RIM has an interesting multi-device marketing strategy these days. rather than have one blackberry replace an earlier model, they're selling different blackberries to different markets. smart.

I type WAY too much on the BB to use the non-qwerty keyboard. Like most Blackberry addicts, I can type on my keyboard in the dark. How the heck will we do that on the suretype keyboard? I personally haven't seen the Pearl, but from the sounds of the apps it's a step (awfully late?) in the right direction. The fact that my 8700 can't play my VoIP WAV messages is silly... that feature should have been in the OS a LONG time ago.
